Concern at service cuts

Sinn Féin Councillor Philip McGuigan has expressed concern at Roads Service cuts being contemplated and implemented by DRD minister Danny Kennedy.

Cllr McGuigan said: “I have been trying to get a few street light bulbs replaced in Dunloy now for over three weeks and the response I am getting is that this budget is cut.

“I have to say I find this unacceptable. In the dark of winter street lights help protect our citizens and keep them safe from accidents.

“I also have major concerns about any reduction in clearing gullies and road repairs has the potential to increase road traffic accidents and could cost lives.

“Recent flooding in the Dunloy and Rasharkin area was severe, and it is imperative to avoid a repeat that gullies are continually cleared.

“The minister is quite aware of the problems that arise following torrential rain with our drainage systems too often unable to cope with it.

“As we face into the autumn with leaves falling and blocking drains any heavy or prolonged periods of rain could quickly lead to increased flooding risks.

“This poses not just a risk to property but more significantly it poses a risk to life. Traffic on roads where water cannot clear due to blocked gullies substantially increases the risk of road collisions and potential fatalities.

“The Minister needs to ensure that money is available for these vital
services”
