Concern is raised over hospital traffic

CONCERN has been raised about the level of traffic along Kernan Road beside Craigavon Area Hospital.

Craigavon DUP Councillor Philip Weir said: “A response from DRD Road Service indicates that their assessment at Kernan Avenue has found it would not be highly placed when compared to other schemes and is unlikely to be included in a programme for traffic calming works for the foreseeable future.

"The assessment would have included collision history, vehicle speeds, volume and type of traffic and environmental factors such as the proximity of schools and health facilities.

"Many vehicles travel along Kernan Road at excess speed and at specific periods there are high levels of traffic. Kernan residents have expressed their concerns to me, and MP David Simpson has also been working on this matter."

Dr Weir said: "At the start and end of the school day, there tends to be many children on the road and rows of parked cars outside the integrated primary school.

"I want to ensure that this assessment by DRD was not carried out over the summer period when the school was off, and I am asking them to clarify exactly when it took place.

"The road is obviously used frequently by ambulances often in emergency situations. At the hospital end of Kernan Road the roundabout is surprisingly one of the smallest in Craigavon.

"At the opposite end, particularly during peak periods for those commuting to work, there are difficulties turning right onto the Seagoe Road with traffic queuing further and further back.”
