Mr Durkan said: “This deeply regrettable news will come as a huge blow to workers and their families.

“Any news which could adversely affect jobs at B&Q has to be absolutely lamented.

“I have been in contact both yesterday and today with Kingfisher PLC and B&Q to get clarity for staff, and I will continue these efforts to see what can be done to mitigate this.

“However, B&Q have consistently maintained a ‘holding line’ that they will only be issuing a statement on this once all workers have been contacted.

“I would sincerely hope that management at B&Q will be able to keep an operation on some scale at this site.

“I know from personal experience and my many visits to this store that staff there are very good, helpful and friendly.

“Indeed, this decision by B&Q at a corporate level is purely a response to market conditions and no comment on the aptitude or skills of the Derry workforce.”
