Concern over speed

ROAD users have been urged to take extra care when driving through villages.

The UUP’s George Savage MLA received a number of complaints from Donaghcloney and Gamblestown residents about careless drivers.

He said: “Road users should be taking extra care when driving through rural towns. It is often the case that some people ignore rural village limits on the grounds that there is less chance of being caught.

“My office has received a number of complaints about the speed of some cars going through Donaghcloney and along the Dromore Road in Gamblestown. Some residents are even calling for tougher measures to tackle the excessive speed which poses dangers to all aspects of the quiet rural life.

“It is important that drivers realise the dangers of excessive speeds not suitable for the conditions on small country roads, not only to themselves but all pedestrians living in those areas."

Mr Savage added: “I intend to meet with Roads Service to raise the issue in order that residents can be reassured I am addressing their concerns head on. The last thing anybody wants is for a collision to occur putting lives at risk.

“Road safety is an issue that affects us all from the very minute we learn to walk, heightening awareness of the dangers on our roads is the only way we can get attitudes to change for the better.”
