Concern over state of Tannaghmore Gardens

CRAIGAVON Council have been accused of allowing one of the jewels in its crown to go to waste.

Mental health group New Horizons used to be responsible for maintaining the demonstration garden at Tannaghmore Gardens. Since they've lost the contract it's been claimed the garden has fallen into disrepair.

New Horizons were providing employment for those with mental health difficulties at Tannaghmore Gardens. They still have a presence at Tannaghmore - a rented space where they develop horticultural products in a walled garden as a service for local people with mental health needs.

A former New Horizons worker, who used to work at Tannaghmore Gardens, said: "When I was out there for three years it done me the world of good.

"It's supposed to be a beauty spot, but since they took the contract off the mental health team it's a disgrace."

A spokesperson for Craigavon Council said: "The contract with Craigavon New Horizons has come to an end and Craigavon Borough Council are now responsible for maintaining the demonstration garden at Tannaghmore Gardens.

"During this beautiful weather we would encourage as many people as possible to come down and enjoy Tannaghmore gardens and all its beautiful surroundings and the wonderful farm and play area which are free to enjoy."

Regarding the poor state of the demonstration garden the spokesperson said: "This is due to a combination of factors - short staffing which will be addressed in a short period of time coupled with vandalism of the area. When our quota of staff is secured the gardens will be back to their former glory."
