Concern voiced over roundabout

SOMEONE is going to be killed at a traffic calming measure in north Lurgan, it has been claimed.

The mini-roundabout at Lake Street and Antrim Road is the scene of regular accidents according to a day-to-day user of the road.

The most recent crash there involved a jeep and a car at around noon on Tuesday. Police confirmed it was a damage only collision and there were no injuries to report.

Martin McGeown who runs an auto repair business based at North Street said: “I’m out road testing at least half a dozen times a day. Every time you go out past it your heart is in your mouth.

“It used to be a T-junction. It slowed traffic a bit, but it was safer. Then they put this excuse for a roundabout in.”

Martin continued: “What happens is people coming out of Lake Street forget to give way.

“Sometimes the accidents can be once a week. It’s an accident blackspot. Are they going to wait until someone is killed?

“The majority of it is downright ignorance. They don’t care who’s got the right of way. I’m down here 16 or 17 years. It was a T-junction for as long as I can remember. And I never remember there being the amount of accidents there is now.”

According to police the roundabout at Lake Street and Antrim Road is not a problem location.
