Concerns over Waterloo Road

NI Water is currently carrying out a 15-week project which started a few weeks ago and is part of a £14m investment programme.

However, resident Darrin O’Neil who has lived in the area for five years said that he is worried how the work will affect the condition of the road when it is completed.

“I know that the work is essential I don’t have a problem with that - I see the men working on the road and they are out in all weathers,” he said.

“But the road is in a complete state at the moment. It needs to be resurfaced. I don’t know if the road will simply be patched up or it will get a complete overhaul. I do not like to complain but I would not like to see the road getting any worse.

“There are great lumps of muck on my car everytime I drive down the road. It is a complete mess at the moment.

“The verge has been damaged and I just worry what way the road will end up after the work is carried out.”

A spokesperson for Northern Ireland Water said, “NI Water can confirm it will carry out a full reinstatement of the trench on Waterloo Road where work will take place. We can also confirm that the grass verges will also be reinstated to the way they were before.

“This work is part of the overall Castor Bay to Belfast Water Trunk Main project which is a £14 million investment that will involve laying a new 29km water pipeline from Castor Bay Water Treatment Works in Craigavon to south Lisburn.

“The pipeline will link into an existing trunk main to transport the water supply on to Belfast.

“This major scheme will provide a vital source of water coming into Belfast, which will be especially important during future winters and in supplementing increased demand in the area. The project will continue until Summer 2015.”
