Concerns voiced over 'social car scheme'

CONCERNS have been expressed by Moyle councillors about the future of the 'social car scheme' in the area.

Sinn Fein councillor Oliver McMullan said the service was stopping and he said it would cause a “lot of hardship” as many people including the elderly rely on it to go to hospital appointments.

The scheme works by car owners volunteering to drive users to appointments and in return the car user is paid a sum per mile.

In the absence of such a scheme, Cllr McMullan said someone from the Glens wanting to go to Antrim Hospital who does not have their own transport would have to get three different buses on each leg of the journey.

Independent councillor Price McConaghy said the it is a “terrible development” and he said he recently used the scheme to travel to Altnagelvin Hospital.

Moyle Council has agreed to write to a number of politicians and groups about the matter.

The Times contacted North Antrim Community Transport about the issue but at the time of going to press we did not receive a reply.
