Concert marks 120th anniversary

LURGAN Salvation Army Band will celebrate their 120th Anniversary with a spectacular concert on Saturday, May 5.

120 years of unbroken music making is something of which the current membership are very proud, and so have been working hard to make these celebrations special.

Guest soloist for the evening is 17-year-old James Fountain. James is Co-Principal Cornet with Grimethorpe Colliery Band, one of the world’s great brass bands.

To hold this prestigious position at the tender age of 17 gives some indication of the musical pedigree of this young man.

Lurgan Salvation Army Band, under the leadership of Bandmaster Kenny Briggs, will be both accompanying James in his performances and performing in their own right.

Vocal contrast will be provided by Capriccio Choir under their musical director Pat McAlinden.

Unlike Lurgan Salvation Army Band, Capriccio choir cannot boast a long illustrious history but they do have a reputation for providing music of the highest calibre, both collectively as a choir, and individually as solo items.

With music from different disciplines, vocal and instrumental, they have a tremendous amount of talent and come highly recommended

The band and corps are looking forward to welcoming an old friend to lead these celebrations. Major John Mott, a much respected Corps Officer from the early eighties is returning to act as Chairman for the night and of course he will be taking the opportunity of renewing old friendships.

Major Mott, a fine musician in his own right, left Lurgan in 1983 to assume high profile musical roles at national level with the Salvation Army.
