East Antrim MLA Stewart Dickson hit out at those who left the object near the North Woodburn Reservoir.

The Alliance representative said: “I totally condemn the actions of those who are perpetrating these types of hoaxes. There can be no justification for those intent on continuing down the path of fear and intimidation.

“This latest alert has caused unnecessary disruption for many in the surrounding area, including residents and ramblers and serves no purpose whatsoever.

“I want to praise those who provided help and assistance including the Army bomb disposal staff and PSNI officers.

“As we seek to move towards a shared future for everyone in Northern Ireland, we must stand together in condemnation of those determined to drag our society back to the dark days of the past.

“I would urge anyone with information on those behind this incident to contact the police on the non-emergency number 101 as soon as possible.”

Alternatively, the independent charity Crimestoppers can be contacted on 0800 555 111.
