Conquerors in concert at Braid

Ballymena Young Conquerors Flute Band will stage their 8th annual Spring concert in the Braid Arts Centre.

Under the musical directorship of conductor Kevin Duffy, the band will present a wide variety of items from its broad repertoire, including marches, classical, Irish traditional and music from the stage, screen and television on Thursday, April 28.

The band is currently celebrating 130 years of music making in this area. From humble beginnings as a marching band, it has evolved into one of the top flute orchestras in the country, and has appeared on both Ulster Television and BBC. Last October the band performed a half hour concert on BBC Radio Ulster. It has also won numerous Championship titles in the contesting field.

Joining the band will be number of special guests who will bring their own brand of professionalism to the evening. Rebekah Durston from the Ballymena Chamber Orchestra will be performing on the violin, including 2 specially arranged pieces in which she will be accompanied by the band. Popular local soprano Tracey Martin will once again be featured in a number of pieces along with the band.

Travelling all the way from the Newry and South Down area will be the flute ensemble “Hi F’Flutin”, performing under the leadership of the Conquerors own piccolo player, Uel Faulkner.

A first for the band this year will be a performance of an Irish traditional piece arranged for band and Uilean pipes. Soloist for this item will be Leah Robb, one of the bands solo concert players. Young local talent will also be showcased, in the form of Sarah McKeown (flute) and Hope Irwin (cello). The secret of any successful concert is in the choice of compere, and once again the band is pleased to have Jackie Fullerton MBE at the helm.

Over the past few years this concert has become one of the highlights of the cultural year in this community, and tickets are sure to be in great demand.

Tickets cost £10 each (including programme) and are currently available from band members and the Braid Centre Box Office.
