Construction industy needs help: McClure

THE recession is continuing to hit the local construction industry so hard that there is little hope of witnessing an upturn in the foreseeable future, Coleraine DUP Alderman James McClure has warned.

More and more people who work in construction are losing their jobs as the recession bites.

“I fear that we will not see an improvement in the next 12 months and that is bad news both on the jobs front and also for the local economy which is feeling the strain”, said Alderman McClure.

His comments come as a report from chartered surveyors revealed that activity in the local construction market fell further in the second quarter of the year.

Alderman McClure said: “The large public spending cuts are a major factor depressing the local construction market, which is very public sector driven.

“Northern Ireland’s infrastructure has been under-funded for many years, and if we dont make the necessary investment now, our economy will continue to suffer from this well into the future.

“I believe Government should be focusing its resources on the areas that will have the most positive impact for the economy and society,” he added.
