As the smell of the freshly cut grass fills the air so too will the aroma of many global culinary treats as the Continental Market injects seasonal gastronomic splendour into the retail experience across Northern Ireland.

Arriving in Londonderry from Tuesday, May 29 to Wednesday, May 30, the market will be a colourful addition to the city at its usual location at Guildhall Square. Trading each day from 9am to 6pm this is your chance to experience the cosmopolitan atmosphere of the famous market

Sponsored by Stena Line, the Continental Market tour brings a fresh and cosmopolitan charm to the outdoor market experience across the province. Now in it’s third year it is fast becoming a symbol of Spring, not only with Northern Irish shoppers but also for tourists and visitors to the island.

The award winning Continental Market, has been a regular visitor to the city located at Guildhall Square as well as being a festive fixture in the grounds of the Belfast City Hall also.

With traders from 26 countries as far afield as Morocco, India, Belgium, France, Russia, Tanzania, Spain and China, the tour shall visit a number of towns and cities across Northern Ireland, providing a colourful shopping experience with items such as exotic food from various countries, Peruvian Clothing and Baltic Amber Jewellery to name a few. The Market’s on-going commitment to local business means indigenous traders can also be seen offering the finest local produce alongside the amazing mix of International stalls, helping to attract visitors to town and city centre’s throughout the four week tour.

The Mayor, Alderman Maurice Devenney welcoming the Continental Market to Londonderry said it would create a buzz and atmosphere in the city centre and give locals a chance to sample some international fair: “The Market will also attract shoppers and visitors to the city as we prepare for a summer of fantastic events including the visit of the Olympic Torch as part of our Big Flame Festival weekend in June, the Peace One Day concert and the Clipper Homecoming Festival in July.”

During their stay in Northern Ireland the Market’s visiting traders will be exporting not only Northern Ireland’s reputation as an exemplary host, they will also be supporting local retailers by encouraging people to shop in their town and city centres.

Chief Executive of Northern Ireland Independent Retail and Traders Association, Glyn Roberts welcomed the return of the touring Continental Market and the boost it would bring to Northern Irish retail.

He said: “The Continental Market tour is an excellent initiative, which brings something different and diverse to Northern Ireland. It helps attract visitors to towns and city centres, many of who go on to shop in other retailers near by. In this celebratory year it’s great to be able to show off quality attractions such as the Market.”
