Contractors rapped over roads to nowhere

FOUR contractors unable to complete roads in Londonderry last year were subject to procedures served by DRD Roads Service last year.

Across Northern Ireland the total figure was 42 including, two contractors responsible for roads projects in Strabane and nine in Omagh.

This financial year, however, there were no procedures served on firms in the Londonderry area, though in Strabane there have been two and in Omagh four thusfar in 2009/10.

Roads Minister Conor Murphy was asked by way of a question tabled at Stormont to outline how many Article 11 procedures have been served on contractors unable to complete roads in developments here in each of the last two years.

His response included the figures above, which relate directly to roads in the North West. He stated that DRD served Article 11 procedures on 95 occasions and incurred costs of 2,211 when completing one development.

But in all other instances, the costs associated with completing each of the developments were recovered from developers' road bonds.
