East Antrim MLA David Hilditch paid tribute to the former first citizen, who was a close friend, at the official launch of the Greenisland Masterplan last Thursday morning in Greenisland Football Club.

Alderman Johnston passed away in February following a long battle with cancer.

“It’s an important day for Greenisland and obviously timely with the changeover of the councils, but in particular this brings to mind the contribution of the late Charlie Johnston and his part in the whole project,” Mr Hilditch said.

A former chairman of both the Economic Development sub-committee and the board of governors at Greenisland Primary School, Alderman Johnston served on Carrickfergus Borough Council for over 30 years.

During Christmas celebrations in the town at the end of last year, the first citizen took the opportunity to encourage Greenisland residents to have their say on the masterplan proposals, adding that they would help “shape the development of the area over the course of the next 10-15 years”.

Mr Hilditch said: “Charlie served this area for so long and would’ve been delighted to see this framework launched.

“I would hope that with so many new developments due for Greenisland down the line, there will be the opportunity to formally mark his contribution.”
