Controlled explosion on Londonderry hoax object

HOMES were evacuated in Londonderry on Thursday night as a controlled explosion was carried out on a suspect object later declared a hoax.

SDLP Councillor Helen Quigley has strongly condemned those responsible for the hoax security alert at Abercorn Place which she said caused local residents to be put out of their homes.

Cllr Quigley, who attended the scene of last night's alert, said: "The police clearly believed this presented a credible threat as they called in the bomb squad.

"Whoever can do this type of thing cares nothing for the people of the locality.

"The days of these security alerts should be well and truly over. They achieve nothing but cause major disruption for the entire community.

"There is no support for this type of activity and I would urge those responsible to desist immediately."

A controlled explosion was carried out on the suspicious object which was then removed for examination.

Residents were able to return to their homes shortly before 0100 BST.
