Officers attended the MUST Hostel, where McCandless had been residing, and the defendant “expressed remorse” for the incident.

McCandless murdered his wife Zara in a frenzied stabbing attack at their home in Coleraine in May, 1998. The couple’s eight year-old son was present during the horrifying incident.

District Judge, Bernie Kelly, sentenced McCandless to two months in prison for the Cookstown assault.
