Cookstown council to celebrate Rock GAA when All Ireland campaign ends

The decision, made at the monthly council meeting on Tuesday night [Dec 9], came after discussion of a motion calling on the council to “recognise in the most appropriate way the fantastic success of Rock St Patrick’s GAA Club”.

Sinn Fein Councillor Cathal Mallaghan, described how Rock GAA beat Derrytresk in their county final, before going on to defeat a fellow Cookstown District football team - Gaels Moneymore - in the Ulster Junior Championship Quarter Final.

“They then faced-down Drumaness from Co Down in the semi final,” he said, “eventually becoming victors against Urrisk from Co Donegal in the final at Eoghain Beag in Dungiven.

“The Rock,” Cllr Mallaghan added, “will now play Brosna from Co Kerry in the All Ireland semi final.”

Speaking about the motion, which was submitted by councillors Clarke, McAleer, Mallaghan, McIvor, McElhone, McNamee, he said: “This very small club on the outskirts of Cookstown Parish has produced very high quality football.

“They have also picked up additional silverware with player Conor McCreesh winning a TeamTalk AllStar award.”

The council unanimously agreed to host a civic reception when their All Ireland campaign comes to an end.
