Cookstown girls stole car at a party and crashed it

A pair of Cookstown friends, who took a car without permission at a party while drinking and crashed it into a bin, have been given community service orders totalling 350 hours.

Jayne McGarvey (20) from Westfort and Amy Reid also 20, from Coolnafranky Park, appeared at Dungannon Magistrate’s Court on Friday.

McGarvey pleaded guilty to taking the vehicle without consent, drink driving, and driving with no license or insurance, while Reid pleaded guilty to allowing herself to be carried in a vehicle.

The pair crashed the car in front of a police patrol on September 19, the court was told.

When questioned by police at the scene, McGarvey appeared agitated and nervous and did not speak, whereas Reid told officers: “We give ourselves up. We stole it.”

According to the defence solicitors, McGarvey claimed that it was Reid’s idea to take the vehicle while they were at a party, but felt that she was the better driver, whereas Reid claimed that it was McGarvey’s idea to take the car.

District Judge John Meehan noted how McGarvey had appeared tongue-tied and nervous at the scene, while Reid, who has a criminal record, behaved differently. It was clear from the psychological dynamics that she was no mere ‘ride along’, he said. He fined McGarvey £450 and gave her 150 hours service and gave Reid 200 hours.
