Cookstown man jailed after causing crash

A Cookstown man has been imprisoned after he was caught driving without licence or insurance.

Laurynas Leonavicius, 23, from Old Rectory Meadows, crashed into the rear of a woman’s car while she waited at a Drum Road roundabout on November 27.

He convinced the woman not to call the police, assuring her that he would pay for the £1,643 damage. He gave her his phone number.

It was only when her insurers contacted her to say that the defendant had no insurance that she called the police.

Handing down a prison sentence of two months, fines totalling £300, and a year long driving ban, District Judge John Meehan said, “You show no remorse whatsoever. You’ve taken the view that the accident was not your fault

“You’re only concern was to avoid paying anything by making utterly dishonest assurances,” he told Leonavicius.
