Cookstown mum power helps to create lasting friendships with CRAFT project

Aoibheann, Teri and Jasmine, pictured, have made lasting friendships on the outings, fun days and various events organised by CRAFT - Community Relations And Families Together - which is getting ready to hold its second AGM on April 13.

The group came about after a group of mums decided they wanted to foster relationships across the religious divide which were founded when the children attended nursery school.

The MAIL spoke to group representative, Cara McElwee, whose daughter Teri is one of the many children who have been able to benefit from the commitment of those behind the project.

“We are a cross community group for children from the three primary schools in Cookstown - Holy Trinity, Cookstown PS and Phoenix PS”, Cara explained.

“A group of mummies who had been involved in the CRIS - Community Relations In Schools - project, for nursery school children, found that there was nothing like that for when the children moved on to primary. We wanted to maintain the friendships that were there and more and more families have been joining us. We will have about 150 children at our Easter event this Saturday in Drum Manor Forest which is one of our biggest during the year. Through CRAFT, children whose paths may never have crossed can find friends for life.”
