Cookstown woman’s head shave raises £3,500 for Alzheimer’s

Gemma Wylie wanted to do something a bit different that would get people talking about dementia and decided on shaving her hair off.

With the help and support of her mum, Daphne, Gemma held a sponsored head shave in the Royal Hotel, Cookstown in February.

Gemma would like to thank all the local businesses who very generously contributed to the night, their support has been fantastic.

She paid special thanks to Grace Davidson of Grace Davidson Hair, Sandholes and the Royal Hotel, Cookstown.

“My granny, Lottie Hazelton, lived with Alzheimer’s disease,” said Gemma.

“ I am overwhelmed by the number of people who have made a donation to make up the final amount of £3550. A big thanks to my mum, Daphne Wylie, for her support in organising the night.’

Daphne Wylie said: “The entire family are extremely proud of Gemma for her fundraising effort.

“Unfortunately Gemma’s granny died shortly after the event, but we hope the money raised will help others living with dementia continue to live well in their community with access to the relevant services.”

Gillian Clarke, Community Fundraiser for Alzheimer’s Society in South & West Northern Ireland added her praise.

“Gemma has raised a fantastic amount for the Society, this is a real testament to her passion for the cause.

“As a charity, we rely on the generosity of individuals like Gemma to help us support people to live well with dementia today and fund research to find a cure for tomorrow’.
