Cookstown’s young boxers return home with medals after Russian triumph

Cookstown Boxing Club boxers Francis Quinn and Ethan McGuckin will return home this morning with some extra baggage.

The pair had spent the last week at the European Schoolboy Championships in Anapa, Russia representing Ireland.

Ethan returned home with a silver medal from the championships, while team mate Francis had a bronze to show for his efforts over the course of the week.

Ethan had moved through his opponents over the course of the week with consumate ease getting the better of Armenian, Scottish and Israeli opponents 3-0 on the each of the judges scorecards.

In the final he lost out 2-1 to Ukrainian opponent Yuri Miadakov. Nevertheless this was a quite a performance from the Cookstown boxer fighting at this level for the first time.

Francis also reached the semi-final in the 68 kilo class were he lost out to a very useful Russian Ilya Bogatyrev.
