Cops told to ‘up the game’

A TELEPHONE number set up for members of the public to report non-urgent incidents or concerns has come in for criticism.

The 0845 600 8000 number - an alternative to the emergency 999 number - was described as “ridiculous to the extreme” at a meeting of Ballymoney District Policing Partnership in Dervock last Tuesday.

“I have tried (to call) on a number of occasions when I’ve seen anti-social behaviour in the village,” said Steven Phillips of Dervock and District Community Association.

“There have been times it has rang out.

“In regards to the 0845 number I think you need to up the game there.

“It is not good enough.”

Area Commander of the PSNI, Brenda Cairns, said there had been some teething issues since the number was set up but she understood that these had largely been addressed.

Mr Phillips said he was concerned crime may not being reported due to the problems with the 0845 number.
