Costello’s ‘army are here to play

A three decade gap will be bridged in Londonderry tonight (Thursday) when one of music’s most iconic figures returns to play in Northern Ireland for the first time since the early 1980s.

Elvis Costello will play at The Venue as part of the UK City of Culture celebrations. Last time he was in Northern Ireland he was backed up by The Attractions, but this time its The Imposters, who are in essence the same line-up as the old band with the addition of bass player Davy Faragher,

Costello’s latest tour has already received rave reviews across the UK and it is apparent the renowned wordsmith has lost none of his famed caustic outlook on the world around him.

His set so far has been almost 30 songs long, a fact that promises to make for a night of serious entertainment for all those planning to go.

Graeme Farrow from the Culture Company said: “We are delighted to welcome Elvis Costello to The Venue.

“It’s been a long wait and I know there are a lot of fans who are eagerly anticipating this concert. It’s going to be a great night and for many it will be one of the highlights of the City of Culture year.”

Costello began his career in London’s pub rock scene in the early 1970s. His critically acclaimed debut album ‘my Aim is True’ was recorded in 1976. He then formed The Attractions as his backing band and they recorded together for the best part of the next decade before splitting in 1986.

His work has covered many genres through the years fron New Wave to Punk and he has won many awards in his career including a Grammy and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2003.
