The ‘Lifetime Recognition of Contribution to the Ballymena Borough’ Awards will presented in early 2014.

The brainchild of Mayor, Cllr Audrey Wales, the awards aim to recognise the significant contribution made by a number of key people and groups to the borough prior to the winding up of Ballymena Borough Council.

Bringing the details to the local authority’s October meeting in The Braid, Council officer Roger McKnight said it had been agreed that Council would recognise those people or groups who had not already received a ‘Freedom of the Borough’ or had a facility named after them.

The recognition, he said, would come in the form of a specially designed ‘Seven Towers Medal’ to be presented at a Special Meeting or Achievements Ceremony in January or February, 2014.

Mr McKnight also reported that recipients would be decided on the merits of their contribution to the locale and could, for example, be ‘award winning industrialists, persons who have created sustainable employment, or community workers who dedicate their spare time helping others for no reward’.

Councillors agreed that the process should get underway as soon as possible.
