Council and Asda to give children a sporting chance

FAMILIES in the Coleraine borough can avail of free summer sports courses for children thanks to Asda's Sporting Chance initiative.

Coleraine Borough Council has teamed up with Asda to roll out the programme in time for this summer.

With Sporting Chance, children have the option to participate in a wide range of different free sports courses as part of Council's Summer Recreation Programme in association with Really Light Ribena. Kids can take the opportunity to practice and enjoy the more traditional sports, such as football, tennis and swimming. Alternatively they can sample some of the more unusual activities that they may never have tried before including, adventure running, beach volleyball, street hockey, and much more.

Asda Sporting Chance vouchers are available at the checkouts from Asda, Coleraine and are also available to download from Asda's website under free activities (www.asda.com/freeactivities). Please note, free spaces are limited and will be allocated on a first come first served basis.

All you need to do is pop into your local Asda store and pick up a Sporting Chance voucher from the checkout or download one from the website. Search for a course on their website or call 0844 3356408. Then bring your voucher along to enrolment day on Saturday, June 12 to Coleraine Leisure to choose your sports course.

Roger Downey, Council's Sports Development Officer, said: "This initiative will benefit families and fits in with our commitment to improving young people's health in our borough.

"Asda is offering the courses for free to allow children to enjoy a healthy, active lifestyle. The Sporting Chance initiative is a simple way to help families address and improve their lifestyles and have fun at the same time."

Asda's Head of the Community, Fiona Campbell-Reilly, added: "Our Sporting Chance scheme offers families an affordable and enjoyable way to get active, and gives children the chance to develop new skills. It is designed to afford children the opportunity of enrolling and participating in activities they may not have even tried before due to financial pressures or constraints at home.

Enrolment for Coleraine Borough Council's Summer Sports Recreation programme starts this Saturday at Coleraine Leisure Centre at 8.15am.

For more information on the courses please contact the Sports Development Team, Coleraine Borough Council, telephone 7034 7234.
