Council awards renewable energy contract

The contract was secured following a competitive tender, which saw the council join forces with a further 19 local authorities in the tender process to maximise their spending power and secure the best possible deal for each council authority and their local ratepayers.

Power NI will supply two sites in Larne - the Town Hall on Upper Cross Street and the swimming pool at the leisure centre on Tower Road, both of which are very popular public facilities.

Announcing the contract win, Alan Egner, commercial sales and marketing manager, Power NI said: “We are delighted to have been awarded this contract with Larne Borough Council following a competitive process.

“In March last year the Department of Enterprise, Trade and Investment’s Strategic Energy Framework set a target of 40 per cent of all energy used to be secured from renewable sources by 2020.

“We will be working closely with Larne Borough Council over the next 12 months to help them in their efforts towards this goal and this contract is a great start.

“As a result of being supplied with ‘green’ energy from renewable sources, the councils will be saving 22,470 tonnes of CO2.”
