Council backs equal marriage

MAGHERAFELT District Council has passed a motion supporting equal marriage rights on a 10-5 party vote.

The motion, tabled by Sinn Fein, was opposed by members of the two Unionist parties.

DUP chair Councillor Paul McLean said it was against his Christian beliefs and was an abomination so far as he was concerned.

Ulster Unionist Councillor George Shiels argued that marriage by definition is a contract between a man and woman.

DUP Councillor Tommy Catherwood said equal marriage rights went against the “teaching of God’s word”.

Supporting the motion, Sinn Fein Councillor Catherine Elattar said same sex couples were entitled to equal rights and should be allowed to marry.
