Council backs International Appalachian Trail

COLERAINE Borough Council has backed a proposal to use the existing Ulster Way trail, through ‘dual branding’, as the International Appalachian Trail throughout the Province.

Magne Haugseng, accompanied by Dr Bob Curran, gave a presentation outlining the IAT proposal at last week‘s Leisure and Environment committee meeting.

The trail is an attempt to connect walking trails in the Appalachian Mountains of North America with others trails in the UK, Europe and Africa.

It is claimed the areas share geology going back a billion years through a process of ancient supercontinents forming, breaking up and forming again.
