Council backs post campaign

CARRICK councillors are backing a campaign to keep the Royal Mail in public ownership.

Members this week agreed to support the Communication Workers’ Union’s ‘Keep the Post Public’ campaign, which opposes any sell-off of the service to a private operator.

Cllr Terry Clements, a former Royal Mail employee, told this week’s meeting of the Support Services committee: “We should support this. It would mean redundancies for postal workers if (privatisation) goes through.

“You can see what a shambles the Post Office is in at the minute, but the workers are trying to do their job and with this over their heads it is very, very hard.”

Cllr Stewart Dickson agreed that the council should reiterate its past support for the CWU.
