Council backs Surfing Championships

COLERAINE Borough Council has agreed to donate over £2,000 to support the Portrush Open Surf Championships which will be held in April.

Members of Council’s Policy and Development Committee meeting on Tuesday heard that the Causeway Coast Surf Club in association with the Irish Surfing Association had requested the financial assistance for the Championships which will be held at the East Strand on April 10 and 11.

Portrush is one of six venues in Ireland selected to host the Championship rounds, from which the overall 2010 champions will be crowned.

It is expected that 100 competitors will compete in the Portrush heat. Additional activities this year will be a skateboarding demonstration, a classic VW car and van display and the screening of Irish surf movie ‘Waveriders’ in the Playhouse in Portrush.

The club is also working hard to attract a European Surfing Championship to Portrush in 2011 and hope that staging the heat in April will showcase the venue for the future.

Councillors agreed to give 2,200 to the organisers.
