Council bids farewell to Ballyward area

This boundary change is being introduced as a result of local government reform - the process that will reduce the number of councils in Northern Ireland from 26 to 11.

Banbridge District Council Chairman Councillor Marie Hamilton said: “Newry, Mourne and Down District Council is very fortunate to be gaining such a magnificient part of the Banbridge District.

“We, at Banbridge District Council, have long been proud of our association with Ballyward, which covers an area of 33.5 sq. miles and boasts a host of scenic walkways and natural heritage assets such as Legananny Dolmen and Finnis Souterrain. We have done our utmost to develop the area’s tourism potential, particularly its close proximity to Slieve Croob.”

We are confident that Newry, Mourne and Down District Council will continue to deliver the high standards of service that you are accustomed to.”

Along with the 923 households and 2,817 residents transferring to Newry, Mourne and Down District Council, a number of lands will also transfer including ten rights of way, five car parks, three grass areas and a children’s play area in Leitrim.

The two townlands of Drumlee and Annahinshigo will remain a part of the new Armagh, Banbridge and Craigavon District Council.

From 1 April 2015, Newry, Mourne and Down District Council will be responsible for delivering all services except for household waste collections to the people of Ballyward.

To allow the new councils additional time to put in place the necessary arrangements for the collection of household waste, it has been agreed that this service will continue to be delivered by the new Armagh, Banbridge and Craigavon District Council from April 1. It is anticipated that this arrangement will remain in place for a year.
