Council boost for Green Gym’s Gortgole garden plan

BALLYMENA Borough Council recently delivered compost to Portglenone Green Gym for use in the creation of a new disabled-friendly garden at Gortgole Fold sheltered housing.

Green Gym is a community based project which aims to get volunteers, both able bodied and disabled, involved in gardening and environmental work in the local area.

Green Gym volunteers had been preparing for the delivery by making compost bays by re-using pallets and fence posts.

The compost is the finished product made from the food and garden waste collected throughout the borough through the brown bin collection scheme.

Gary McKnight, Recycling Officer at Ballymena Borough Council said he was delighted to help with this worthy project and to demonstrate that the material collected could be used to improve the local environment.

The Council Parks department are also using this peat-free material in all floral displays throughout the borough. There is also a stock of compost at the civic amenity site which is available free of charge for Ballymena Borough residents.
