Council building goes pink

THE Derry City Council Civic Offices building on the Strand Road will turn pink for the month of October in support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

The Council hopes that the gesture will help raise awareness of breast cancer in the area and encourage more people to support cancer charities in the North West.

The Council has supported other cancer charity initiatives in the past, turning the building yellow as part of the Light the UK Yellow campaign in aid of Marie Curie and blue to create awareness of Diabetes.

Mayor, Alderman Maurice Devenney said: “We are delighted to be able to increase awareness of breast cancer and support the work being done by charities and research organizations to help people and families living with cancer in the North West.

“Each year 50,000 people in the UK hear the devastating words you have breast cancer and while more people are being diagnosed, thankfully survival rates are improving significantly thanks to improved treatment and earlier detection,” he commented.

The building will remain illuminated throughout the month of October.
