Council calls on locals to help reduce illegal dumping

THE District of Moyle has some of the most breathtaking scenery within Northern Ireland.

However illegally dumped domestic and commercial waste is spoiling our beauty spots and making the area less attractive to local residents, businesses and visitors.

Each year Moyle District Council spends a considerable amount of time, effort and money in clearing up waste that has been illegally dumped within the district.

The council’s Environmental Health department investigate numerous incidents of illegal dumping and littering each year and regularly monitor dumping hot spots. Illegal dumping is a criminal offence and can result in fixed penalties being issued. Court proceedings can also be pursued for more serious or repeated offences.

Peter Mawdsley, Head of Environmental Health Services states: "The Council is determined to reduce the amount of dumping within the district. This anti-social behaviour costs council rate payers thousands every year, we are determined to take action against the culprits who continue to blight our community”.

To help reduce council clean up costs and improve the attractiveness of our district, Moyle District Council would ask local residents and businesses to ensure that their refuse is disposed off by appropriate means The Council has a number of designated civic amenity sites which can be used by the general public to dispose of many household materials, free of charge. The council also has a bulky household refuse collection service which can be used to dispose of old furniture, bed, fridges, freezers etc. Further information on these services and local bin collections for both commercial and domestic waste can be obtained from Moyle District Council, Technical Services Department on 02820762225.

Moyle District Council would also encourage members of the public to contact the councils Environmental Health department on 02820762225 to report incidents of illegal dumping or littering within the district.
