Council chair calls for 'a time-bound plan' for delivery of Cookstown bypass

The Chair of Mid Ulster District Council, Councillor Cathal Mallaghan, has welcomed the announcement that the Cookstown Bypass is among a number of strategic infrastructure schemes to progress:

"The Council has long considered a bypass for Cookstown as critical in terms of meeting Mid Ulster's strategic road infrastructure needs and as pivotal to our economic growth.

"We have lobbied continuously to ensure the A29 scheme is prioritised by the Department and the bypass has remained a key element of both the Council's corporate strategy and the newly developed economic strategy to support the Mid South West Growth Deal.

"This is, therefore, welcome news, particularly for our manufacturing, engineering and construction sectors which are now beginning their recovery.

"However, we are acutely aware that this project has stalled in the past and it is more than 2 years since we received assurances that development work on the scheme would re-start.

"It is then absolutely crucial that we see a comprehensive, time-bound plan for the delivery of the bypass and we look forward to receiving these details at the earliest opportunity".
