The Mayor spoke about the tragedy and she also remembered the murder of prison officer Adrian Ismay and those affected by the bombings in Belgium in her opening remarks at a full meeting of council on Tuesday.

Mayor McQuillan said: “I have written a letter of condolence to the family and I am sure you will join me in sending our sympathies to the family and the wider family circle. Our thoughts are also with the family following the murder of Adrian Ismay and the implications of that for the future of Northern Ireland. Our thoughts are also with the people affected by the bombings in Belgium. I hope that people will stand with me in a minute’s silence.”
