Council clarifies position on realm works

COUNCIL wants to reassure traders and businesses in Lurgan that they are being heard and that where possible their concerns taken on board.

They have moved to clarify the position on the bus lay-bys and the provision of two lane traffic which was discussed at last week's meeting of the Chamber of Trade.

“Due to the concern of traders, Council Member Alderman Stephen Moutray and representatives from Council, SIAC and RPS who project manage the public realm scheme for Council, held a private meeting on April 13 with a business representative and thrashed this out,” said a Council spokesperson.

There was also a Public Realm Communications Management group meeting later that day at which the issue was again raised.

“David Logan of RPS has since updated attendees of both meetings that DRD Roads Service is confident that the scheme on Market Street is sufficient to allow vehicles to pass while a bus is parked and therefore maintain the two lanes of traffic.

"They also state it is best to wait until the other side of the road has been completed and then reassess the situation."

She went on: "It is also Council’s understanding that Castle Lane was never actually “finished” as reported.

“The pavement was not completely finished. As with any building project there will be a snagging list for the whole scheme as well as the installation of new street lighting and street furniture.

“The town and the public are experiencing disruption there is no doubt about that. We have always made it clear that this will be the case. However, on the bright side the work will be completed to meet the timescales of the project and we look forward to a bright, attractive and ultra modern town centre."
