Council deals with 300 stray dogs a year

COLERAINE Borough Council's dog wardens have to deal with 300 stray and unwanted animals each year.

And, following the USPCA’s decision to stop providing kennelling facilities for Councils, Coleraine has now awarded its kennelling contract to Margaret Graham of Articlave.

Members of Council’s Leisure and Environment Committee met on Tuesday and were told that Mrs Graham’s kennels have been caring for the stray and unwanted dogs since July and a re-homing scheme is also being facilitated from the site.

Director of Environmental Health, Kieran Doherty, said: “Since the commencement of the arrangements, no healthy dog has had to be destroyed and it is hoped that the current arrangements, backed up by a series of contingencies, will result in dogs being destroyed as an absolute last resort.”

Cllr David Harding, a vet, paid tribute to Louise Neill of the USPCA kennels in Benvarden for her hard work and care for animals over the years.

He also said that he had 25 years experience of working with Mrs Graham and said that she had the “care of dogs at heart”.
