Council defers WWI funds request

Ballymaconnelly Renewal Group has asked Council for funds towards their World War I Centenary programme of events.

During a recent Ballymoney Borough Council meeting, the Leisure Services report explained: “Ballymaconnelly Renewal Group has written to Council advising of the considerable community work undertaken by the Group, in response to local need, to educate and inform and improve the lives of the local population.

“As the World War I centenaries approach, the Group’s aim is to continue their work to educate and inform the local community.

“To that end, they are planning an extensive programme of events and activities, the initial cost estimate of which is £4,000. The Group are seeking financial support towards their programme of events.

“Committee is requested to consider a Community Support Grant Scheme for World War I Centenary Community Events.’

Discussion took place around establishing a grant scheme to assist local community groups with the cost of WWI Centenary events in 2014.

It was proposed by Cllr Ian Stevenson, seconded by Cllr John Finlay, that Council defer the matter to the next committee meeting in February.

Cllr Roma McAfee requested the Director write to the Group and advise that the matter will be tabled at the rates estimates meeting in February for consideration in the 2014/15 budget round.
