Council discouraging use of tyres on bonfires

COLERAINE Borough Council is actively discouraging the use of tyres for bonfires

As part of its “Safer Bonfire” initiative Council is appealing to farm owners to just say no to anyone that approaches them for their old tyres.

Modern farming techniques mean that tyres which would, in previous years, been used to hold down covers on silage stores are no longer needed.

However, disposal options for used tyres have changed considerably due to amended requirements sighted in The Waste and Contaminated Land (NI) Order and the Controlled Waste (Duty of Care) Regulations (NI) 2002.

Through the “Safer Bonfire” scheme, Council aim to encourage farmers to be responsible in the disposal of tyres which are no longer required.

Peter Kerr, Council Environmental Health Officer at Coleraine Borough Council, said: “Tyres have been traditionally used in the building and fueling of bonfires. As the gathering of materials for the July bonfire session will begin shortly, it is crucial that all handlers of ‘scrap’ or ‘beyond use’ tyres are aware of the legal obligations they are under.

“Due to recent legislation, all tyres must now be disposed of through a licensed outlet, and therefore land filling, burning or other means of disposal are all illegal.

“Council appeals to local farmers for their co-operation in this matter and asks that they ensure all used tyres are stored in a safe and secure manner.”
