Council doubles Armoy Road Races funding

ARMOY Road Races will be held on August 6/7 this year it has been revealed and the event has been given a financial shot in the arm from Moyle Council.

Last year the Council gave 5,000 funding to the event but this year, after a proposal from Sinn Fein councillor Paudie McShane, the Council will now pump in 10,000.

August 6 will be a practice day with race day August 7.

Cllr McShane said: "Armoy Motorcycle Road Racing Club have written to Moyle District Council informing them of their plans to hold another Road Race this year. The Race is to be held on the 6th and 7th of August and the Club have informed the Council of their Road closing schedule.

"Alternative routes will be arranged for non race traffic on these days and details of diversionary routes will be advised.

"Given the huge success of last years event, I feel that Council must do all they can to ensure the Race continues annually. It has proved an economic success with over 600,000 coming in to the local economy over the weekend.

"I am delighted that my council colleagues supported my proposal. I have no doubt that this year's event will prove better with additional funding attracting more top riders, in turn attracting a larger crowd."
