Council encourages Creggan residents to become greener

CREGGAN is being encouraged to become greener and residents encouraged to utilise recycling facilities in the area.

A new project, which aims to increase awareness of waste and recycling issues within the Rinmore Drive area of Creggan, is part of an ongoing educational and community engagement process undertaken by the Council to assist the public and increase recycling levels across the Council area.

The scheme will see each household issued with an information leaflet detailing the operation of the blue bin recycling scheme together with additional information on managing other household waste so as to eliminate black bag waste and associated littering and street cleansing issues.

The information will be in pictorial format and will enable residents to readily identify what items can be included in the blue recycling bin.

As part of the campaign, local residents will be invited to 'get their hands dirty' and help in a community clean up of the area. Residents will be encouraged to dispose of all unwanted household and bulky waste items and Council will collect them for free on Saturday, May 08.

Residents will also be provided with a kitchen caddy for use within the home to assist them with their recycling while Creggan while staff from the Triax Neighbourhood Management Team will be available to call and advise householders on a range of waste issues and queries they may have.

Welcoming the scheme, Chair of Environmental Services Committee, Cllr Gerry Mac Lochlainn said the Council is keen to work in partnership with communities to ensure that residents benefit from the full range of Council services that are in place.

He said every effort is being made to encourage householders to maximise their recycling efforts and help Council to divert as much waste as possible away from landfill.

"Council recognise that changes in waste management practices have resulted in some difficulties for some householders but is keen to work with those residents in overcoming these problems," he said.

"Having information to hand in picture format will assist householders in identifying which materials can be recycled and in particular the items added to the scheme recently.

"Maximising the blue bin will also have a positive effect of the amount of waste needing to go into the black bin and this in turn will result n a reduction in the number of black bags put out for collection," he added.

Sean McMonagle from the Triax Neighbourhood Partnership said they were pleased to be working in partnership with Council to create awareness and engage with the public.

"This scheme is really useful and will be beneficial to the entire community, by providing them with an opportunity to dispose of unwanted household goods as well as finding out on how best to utilise recycling facilities that are available.

"We will be actively encouraging people to get involved and support the initiative so that it can be extended across other regions in the city," he commented.
