Council Fourth Highest on Loans League Table

BALLYMENA Borough Council has one of the highest loans per head of population, a report published by the Chief Local Government Auditor, John Buchanan, has revealed.

The report on the exercise by local government auditors of their functions provides background to local government and its management of resources.

It also highlights a range of issues that local government auditors have raised with councils in the course of the audit of the council's statement of accounts for the year to March 31, 2009.

A league table showing the various loan positions at March 31, 2008, puts Ballymena Borough Council fourth highest out of 26 local authorities with a total of 29.1m which works out at 468 per head of population - well above the provincial average of 234 per head.
