Council gains £40,000 recycling grant boost

CRAIGAVON Council have been granted more than £40,000 to help boost participation in recycling schemes across the Borough.

The Council’s Recycling Officer obtained the Rethink Waste Grant of £43,800 last week.

Cllr Johnny McGibbon, who chairs the environment committee, said: “This is welcome news, and is indeed a good news story for the Recycling Officer.”

Recent figures show that householders in the Borough were not recycling enough.

From April to June, only 11% of plastic bottles and 17% of tins and cans were placed in green bins, with the remaining going into blue bins.

Figures for paper and card were more significant, with 40-60% being recycled, however, it was pointed out by the officer that there was room for improvement.
