Council gives backing to road safety scheme

Larne Borough Council has pledged its support for the Department of the Environment’s hard-hitting new road safety campaign.

‘Share the Road to Zero’ is an innovative scheme which aims to encourage citizens in Northern Ireland to sign up to a path towards zero deaths on the roads and in turn make a commitment to use the roads safely.

And the local authority has given its backing to the initiative, along with Larne Policing and Community Safety Partnership and local police.

Larne mayor Councillor Maureen Morrow said: “The tragic road deaths over the last few days have reminded everyone of the dangers on the road.

“This regional initiative has enabled local organisations to show their commitment to work together and promote the road to zero deaths on our roads.”

Brídín Beckett, from DOE road safety, added: “Share the Road to Zero is a huge community programme with one aim – zero road deaths in Northern Ireland.

“This goal is a shared community responsibility. As such, I want to encourage everyone to join up on a journey towards zero road deaths.

“Larne Council, the PCSP and the local PSNI all play an important and highly visible role in this community.

“This means that their support for the Share the Road to Zero campaign will be influential in reducing casualties and helping to achieve zero road deaths in Northern Ireland.

“Any organisation can support this aspiration by pledging and encouraging members or employees to pledge and adopt safer behaviours on the roads.

“As road users, we all have a responsibility to behave safely – as a driver, a passenger, motorcyclist, cyclist or pedestrian so that we do not take risks and we do not put our own lives or anyone else’s in danger.
