Council helping to combat fuel poverty

TO coincide with the colder weather and darker evenings, Coleraine Borough Council is stepping up its campaign to promote funding and grant opportunities to residents of the Borough who are 'fuel poor'.

Over 48,000 households in the Northern Health and Social Services Board catchment area are considered to be fuel poor and over 30% of families in the Borough of Coleraine have home heating difficulties.

A household that is said to be in fuel poverty will spend more then 10% of its annual income on fuel to maintain an acceptable temperature level throughout the home. Those considered most at risk of fuel poverty include older people, families with young children and those with disabilities.

In a bid to combat the increasing problem of fuel poverty, Coleraine Borough Council is running various schemes throughout the Borough. These include making improvements to existing heating systems, installations of new systems, cavity wall and loft insulation, installing thermostatic radiator valves, hot water tank jackets and the provision of energy efficient light bulbs. Other schemes provide cash-back on the installation of various types of insulation.

Leona Donaghy, Energy Efficiency Adviser for the Coleraine area, said; “The recent economic downturn is placing more people at risk of fuel poverty, as unemployment and dependency on welfare benefits rise. Many people who are eligible for these schemes, aimed at reducing fuel poverty, are yet to apply to assistance.

“Coleraine Borough Council and DSD, in association with various organisations, have developed a programme that is specifically targeted at addressing energy inefficiencies in the homes through various mechanisms. Taking these steps could help reduce the likelihood of fuel poverty and improve your energy efficiency.

“The fuel stamp scheme organised by Council, in conjunction with the St Vincent de Paul, is still very popular throughout the Borough. The scheme allows members of the public to purchase and collect 5 stamps from participating retailers. Collected stamps will then be accepted as payment or part payment, by a wide range of fuel suppliers, against your oil bill.

“I would encourage residents of the Coleraine Borough who are eligible for these schemes to apply now for the assistance and support that they are entitled to.”

There are limited places available and other conditions apply. Applications will be assessed on an individual basis. Applications will close in October or sooner if all packages have been allocated - so apply now or risk losing out.
