Council is backing health week

As part of its Be Well programme to promote health and well-being to its employees, Derry City and Strabane District Council is hosting a week of events to coincide with National Men's Health Week from June 13-17.

A series of events including exercise classes, health checks, health awareness workshops and information sessions are being organised during the week in an effort to encourage as many male employees at the Council to become more active and aware of their health and well-being.

Council Chief Executive John Kelpie said: “When it comes to talking about health and wellbeing or dealing with more serious health problems, men are often too shy or embarrassed to do something about it. With that in mind we have put together a full programme of activities to encourage our male staff members to think more about their health.”

A spokesperson from Councils HR Department at Derry City and Strabane District Council said that activities planned are focused on key health issues including managing stress, cancer and heart disease awareness sessions, healthy eating promotion, health checks and lunchtime cycles.

“In putting together the programme of activity we made sure we included activities in both Derry and Strabane that would appeal to members of staff of all ages and with various interests. We are committed to improving the health and well-being of all our staff and hope this programme of activity will help encouraging our teams to be active, to be mindful and to be more aware of their wellbeing,” she said.

The Men’s health activity programme is just one of a series of events being organised by the Council as part of its Be Well initiative that is being rolled out over the next year.
