Council is urged to consult on future of former Newbuildings 'dump' site

DERRY City Council has been urged to start consultations on the future of a former landfill site in Newbuildings.

After local people were last week invited to a consultation event about Culmore landfill site, Alderman William Hay has called for a similar process to be begun in Newbuildings.

Derry City Council and members of the RPS Design Team last week presented a report on the progress of the design of the remediation project at Culmore and information collected during previous consultation events.

Mr Hay said: "What the council is doing in Culmore is welcome. There's also a dump that's been closed in Newbuildings for some time and the council still owns quite a bot of land there.

"I would like to see the council going through the same process in Newbuildings as in Culmore."

Mr hay said the time was now right for the council to look at the future use of the land in Newbuildings, adding that DUP colleague on the council, Maurice Devenney would be bringing the matter to councillors' attention.

He said: "Maurice will raise this at council and I would hope that we get some support and the same process is gone through as in Culmore, so the council can give something back to the Newbuildings community.

"I know the Newbuildings Community and Environmental Association and the wider community would be delighted to be consulted on the future of this site."

At the Culmore event, members of the public had an opportunity to discuss and submit their views and opinions on a Draft Master Plan for the site reflecting feedback from previous events and complimenting the environmental significance of the site.
